Learning Martial Arts Abroad
Martial arts are so popular and wide-spread these days. For most disciplines, you are sure to find a gym or a group that is practicing the art and is open for interested people to join. Sometimes, however, there are arts that are not easy to find and would require one to travel in order to find them.
Capoeira, for example, has been heavily refined from its original form in order to fit the modern setting. However, the original and traditional form of Capoeira can still be found and learned from where it takes root: Brazil. In other words, if you want to learn the most traditional discipline for capoeira, you would have to travel to Brazil to do that.
The same goes through for the older martial arts in the Orient. Traditional Chinese Kung Fu can also be learned by travelling to China and visiting the Shaolin Temple. Majority of authentic Japanese kenjutsu schools can also be found only in Japan, although some of them have branched out overseas and have certified affiliates outside of their home country.
True, it can be expensive to travel outside your country just to learn martial arts. There are, however, some advantages to learning from the country of the art's origin and those are:
• Different discipline
Learning from a traditional instructor allows you to experience a different kind of discipline which can help you understand more about the art later on.
• In-depth understanding
When you study from a Japanese instructor for kenjutsu, for example, you can learn about theory that only a native practitioner can teach you about.
• Learning about the culture
Martial arts come hand in hand with the culture of the country. If you travel to an art's country of birth, you can also understand and live for yourself the culture of the country.
