This project aims to look at the Abolition of Slavery in the context of Capoeira Angola- a traditional form of cultural practice that originated in Bahia, by the Africans brought into slavery during the Colonization of Brazil.
Discover how movement and dance became a secret language used by enslaved peoples to resist those who showed violence and cruelty to them.Learn how to move in these dances and explore the secret messages hidden within.

Discovering
how people escaped from slavery and how slavery changed attitudes and cultures.
Learning objectives
Students will:
- Find out how African people were sold at auction as property.
- Consider how individuals were dehumanized by their owners by being stripped of their identity.
- Understand the cruelty of family separation when sold into slavery.
- Form an appreciation of some of the injustices of a life of slavery on the plantations.
- Learn and understand the many complex forms that resistance to slavery could take, from cultural resistance to escape.
- Form a more in-depth knowledge through a case study of ‘Slavery in Bahia’ to know of examples of successful resistance and the establishment of ex-slave communities (quilombros).
- Understand the resilience of enslaved people in resisting slavery and the cruel punishments put in place to prevent escape.
- Understand that racist attitudes and values were developed in the course of the transatlantic slave trade and how they relate to Capoeira today.
- See how the history of the transatlantic slave trade has affected the subsequent history and development of Capoeira around the world.
